Dorchester County Partners with The Open Space Institute and The South Carolina Forestry Commission to Preserve 1,644 Acres of Lowcountry Forest

Dorchester County donated $4,125,000 in Greenbelt funds to the Open Space Institute towards the purchase of the Beech Hill Tract, a 1,644-acre property on Old Beech Hill Road between the Edisto River Wildlife Management Area and Givhan’s Ferry State Park in the East Edisto area of Dorchester County. The property will be transferred to the South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) and will become a State Forest, managed and operated by the SCFC. The property will be open to the public with recreational opportunities, such as wildlife viewing, hunting, hiking, and biking.

The American Battlefield Trust today announced the acquisition of an approximately 160-acre property within the footprint of the Battle of Hanging Rock in rural Lancaster County. The property is the sixth parcel acquired to support ongoing protection and interpretation efforts at one of South Carolina’s newest battlefield parks. With this current purchase, the protected acres at the Hanging Rock battlefield now total 330 acres.

This role also supports the Controller and other staff in budgeting activities and participates in additional projects designed to foster professional growth in accounting and general office operations. Progressively expanded responsibilities to include learning the payroll process; assuming full ownership of subsidiary financial reporting; producing monthly financial statements and summary reports; reconciling QuickBooks with Virtuous (donor database); and evaluating processes and recommending ways to improve efficiency.
